Sending a new generation of community champions to the California Legislature
This is a big deal.
Between now and 2028, 80% of California legislators will reach term limits.
That means 96+ seats (out of 120 total) will open up!
Close the Gap California calls this the "Motherlode".
The Motherlode gives progressive-minded organizations a once in a generation opportunity to elect a large cohort of lawmakers with the political courage necessary to enact game changing policies that will:
Stabilize the planet
Reduce the wealth gap
End abuse by police
You get the picture
Even if it means pissing off people and industries who benefit from the status quo.
How can organizations take advantage of this historic opportunity?
Start now investing time and resources into serious political action.
Political action can be:
Funding candidates or campaigns
Grassroots organizing to "get out the vote" on their behalf
Each is very important. Ideally, do both.
What else should you do?
Collaborate with groups like:
Close the Gap California – statewide campaign to achieve gender balance in the California Legislature by recruiting progressive women to run.
California Women’s List – state organization dedicated to fundraising for, supporting, and electing pro-choice, Democratic women to office.
Fund Her – Political Action Committee operating in multiple states to put progressive women at the helm of local and state government.
Run for Something - national organization recruiting and supporting young progressives to run in down ballot races.
If you don’t live in California, there’s likely very similar organizations in your area. You just have to find them.
On a lighter note (lol)
Next year, for the first time ever, the California State Fair will host a competition to judge the finest cannabis flower in California.
Cannabis will join other California products, such as wine, craft beer, olive oil and cheese that have competitions at the fair.
Did you ever think - even 10 years ago - this would be possible?
Remember that the next time you feel hopeless that things will never change.
